Troian Bellisario is an ultra-talented actress, and also a huge advocate for mental health care.
Prior to this week’s election, the Pretty Little Liars star (31) filmed a PSA for ATTN in support of Hillary Clinton, in which she opened up about her battle of anorexia.
“With anorexia, a lot of it is presenting a front of ‘everything is okay’ as you’re slowly killing yourself,” she explained. “Gone were the days when I was just a happy, carefree kid who was running around, and suddenly I felt this inability to interact with people and to nourish myself.”
Previously, Bellisario revealed that she’d battled an eating disorder as a high school student, telling Seventeen in 2014 that she would “withhold food” if she did poorly in school that day.
Thankfully, she ended up receiving treatment for her anorexia, and she believes it saved her life.
“If I had just been sort of shunned to the side as not having real problems, I don’t know that I would be living today,” she said. “I just want to make sure that everybody has the same opportunity for treatment that I have, and I think that we have to make sure our government invests in those programs.”
Early detection, diagnosis and treatment of mental illness saves lives. It certainly saved mine. Thank you @attndotcom for asking me to share my story and share why voting in this election for a candidate that supports the treatment of mental Illness for those who can afford it and those cannot. For programs in schools to support students dealing with mental illness and for the continued support and treatment (without stigma) of adults to not just survive but thrive. Full video link in bio.
