How To Recover From A Candy Binge

You had a big weekend and night of indulging in all the Halloween fun and treats, but now it’s the morning after and you’re feeling a little sluggish and even a bit guilty. But registered dietitian Keri Glassmansays there’s no point dwelling on your less-than-healthy choices, just focus on getting back on track instead.

Sugar – If you overdid it with the Halloween candy and sweets, once you’re over the sugar high, you’ll feel drained and tired from the sugar crash. So here’s the fix:

  • Don’t skip breakfast. Eat something with protein and low-sugar, like eggs and sliced avocados.
  • Eat fish, raw nuts, and veggies. The fiber will clean out your gut and protein and healthy fats will help you feel full longer and keep blood sugar stable.
  • Drink water with lemon. You need to stay hydrated and the lemon adds an antioxidant boost.

Alcohol – If you had one too many glasses of Halloween cheer last night, you might have a headache and the shakes, so you need to get your body back in balance. Here’s what you need:

  • Drink coconut water. It’ll help rehydrate you and give you the electrolytes you need. So will miso soup and bananas.
  • Load up on protein. It’s good for the liver, which you need to be kind to after all the cocktails. Also eat lots of veggies and healthy fats.
  • Eat a kale salad. The dark leafy greens will help replace the B vitamins you’ve lost from drinking.

Salt – If you loaded up on pretzels, chips, and other salty snacks, you’re probably feeling the aftermath today. Salt dehydrates you, so your mouth could be dry and you’re probably feeling thirsty. Your rings might not fit because you’re retaining water and your eyes could be puffy. But here’s the fix:

  • Don’t season your food. Put down the salt shaker and stay away from packaged, processed foods.
  • Eat cantaloupe. It’s got lots of potassium, so it can help reduce water retention, so can bananas, broccoli, and Brussels sprouts.
  • Drink more water. Keep a bottle filled and close by so you can rehydrate all day.
