A Utah couple got a surprise when reviewing the hospital bill following the birth of their son.
Below the charge for “Delivery C Section,” they noticed a $39.35 fee for “skin-to-skin” – their fee for getting to hold their baby after delivery.
In a viral post on Reddit, the new dad, Ryan Grassley, writes: “During the C-section the nurse asked my wife if she would like to do skin to skin after the baby was born. Which of course anyone would say yes (to). We just noticed it in the bill today and had a laugh.”
Grassley tells PIX11 he thought the bill was “funny and a bit ridiculous.”
It turns out the Internet had similar feelings, as his Reddit post racked up 2.8 million views in 24 hours.
Grassley demonstrated his sense of humor by starting a GoFundMe to pay off the “skin-to-skin” fee, adding that any additional donations “put towards a vasectomy because I never want to go through these sleepless new baby nights again.”
But, all jokes aside, what’s really up with the $40 charge?
In the comment section, a delivery-room nurse explained that “skin-to-skin’ in the operating room requires an additional staff member to be present … and make sure the baby is safe.”
All in all, Grassley says he and his wife were happy with the care they received at the Provo, UT hospital in September.
