Katy Perry Surprised an Orlando Shooting Survivor on ‘Ellen’ & Things Got Dusty

By: Jon Corrigan

Things got emotional on The Ellen DeGeneres Show when Katy Perry surprised a Pulse nightclub shooting survivor who says her song “Rise” played a vital role in his recovery.

Tony Marrero, 30, was shot in the back four times in the Orlando massacre that killed 49 people and wounded 52 others.

Both Perry and Marrero were overcome by emotion upon meeting, with Tony thanking the singer for everything her music has done for him.

“I just want to say thank you for everything you do. Your lyrics to that song helped me from the day that I was in that hospital, all the way to now. You’re amazing.”

Perry then presented Marrero with another surprise: A year of film school paid for by her.

“I hear that you’re creative, just like me, and you have dreams. I heard that you want to go to film school, so I personally want to pay for your first year.”
