With the new DC film Suicide Squad on the way, many have been drawing comparisons between Jared Leto‘s new version of The Joker and Heath Ledger‘s now-iconic portrayal.
Ledger ended up earning an Oscar at the 2009 Academy Awards for his chilling performance in The Dark Knight, but sadly, he had passed the year before from a drug overdose. His family accepted the award on his behalf.
Now, the late actor’s father has spoken out about his son’s tragic death, even revealing Ledger’s final conversation and his last words.
While speaking with The Daily Mail Australia, Kim Ledger explained that Heath’s sister Kate had tried to warn him about mixing prescription medications.
“The last conversation Kate had with him was this discussion about his medications and she warned him, ‘You can’t mix drugs that you don’t know anything about,’” he recalled. “He said ‘Katie, Katie, I’ll be fine!’ Well, that’s a cavalier boy’s answer. It just put his whole system to sleep I guess.”
Despite the tragedy of Ledger’s passing, his father maintains that it was the actor’s choice to take the medications, and no one else should be blamed for his death.
“It was totally his fault,” he said. “It was no one else’s – he reached for them. He put them in his system. You can’t blame anyone else in that situation.”
“That’s hard to accept,” Ledger added, “because I loved him so much and was so proud of him.”
Heath Ledger was found unconscious in his New York City apartment on January 22, 2008, and pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. He was just 28 years old.
