If you’ve ever given out your Netflix, HBO Go or Amazon Prime password, you’re technically breaking the law.
Password sharing is now a federal crime after a ruling from three judges at the United States Court of Appeals.
The opinion was rendered during the United States v. Nosal trial, a case where a former employee of a firm used a password of another employee still working for the company to download information to use at his new job.
So, while the case doesn’t directly involved Netflix or other streaming services, it does criminalize all password sharing.
But, to be fair, it’s unlikely streaming services will go after their millions of customers doing this.
