After Jaw Surgery, Woman Wakes Up With A New Accent

Lisa Alamia was born and raised in Texas but to hear her speak, you’d think she was from Across the Pond. After getting surgery to correct an overbite in December, she woke up with a British accident.

Originally, Alamia’s doctor said the strange side effect would go away after a few days. Months later,  she still sounded like a Brit so she visited neurologist Dr. Toby Yaltho.

After some tests, Dr. Yaltho diagnosed the Texan with a rare disorder where someone’s voice changes after a surgery or traumatic event. Even he said that he’s read about the disorder, but never thought he’d encounter it. For her part, Alamia’s accent is decreasing and she hopes to get her southern accent back one day.
