Dino Ciccarelli Remembers Gordie Howe

As the city of Detroit prepares to remember Gordie Howe today at the Joe Louis Arena, former Detroit Red Wing Dino Ciccarelli called into Chuck, Rachael and Grunwald to tell us his memories of Mr. Hockey.

Dino played back in the day with Gordie’s son, Mark Howe and he shared a great story of how Gordie critiqued Dino’s game. “We both played right wing and whether I scored a goal or missed a couple of chances, he always made his way over to me and was always critiquing what happened. He’d say ‘You’re not strong on your stick, you need to bear down more.'”

One of ways Gordie is still remembered in today’s game is the Gordie Howe Hat Trick. The GHHT is a goal, an assist and a fight. Dino says that early in his career he had a few. “I learned very quickly that if I want to survive in this league, I can’t fight. I had a couple of goals, a couple of assists and two lost fights!”
