U.S. Marine Memorial in Chesterfield Township Needs Your Help

A Chesterfield Township memorial to 22 fallen U.S. Marines needs your help.

The 1st Battalion, 24th Marines is a U.S. Marine Corps Reserve infantry battalion headquartered at Selfridge ANG Base.

The 1-24 Memorial is designed to commemorate the 22 fallen men of the 1-24 Marines who lost their lives in Iraq. The Memorial is intended to provide a gathering place for the souls of the departed and the Marines, families and community left behind to honor their brave service and memory.

In 2006, the battalion deployed to Iraq’s Al Anbar Province, arriving in downtown Fallujah to serve for seven months.

Those of the 1/24 who died are: Brock Babb, Joshua Hines, Richard Buerstetta, Tyler Overstreet, Thomas Gilbert, Jonathan Thornsberry, Tarryl Hill, Marcus Golczynski, Troy Nealey, Minhee Kim, Bryan Burgess, Jeremy Shock, Brent Beeler, Nicholas Miller, Brett Witteveen, William Spencer, Christopher Esckelson, Jacob Neal, Luis Castillo, Mark Kidd, Matthew Pathenos and Bufford Van Slyke.

A number of the fallen Marines hailed from Michigan cities, including, Shelby Township, Eaton Rapids, Canton, Napoleon Township, Vassar, Silverwood, Lawton, Milford and Bay City.

Incorporated into memorial’s design is a table set for 22 located at 47275 Sugarbush Road in Chesterfield Township.
