Eric Church Credits Kris Kristofferson For Keeping Him In Nashville

Without Kris Kristofferson, we probably wouldn’t have Eric Church. At the Life and Songs of Kris Kristofferson concert taping, Eric recalled a bad pre-record deal meeting in Nashville that almost sent him back to North Carolina. Eric said it was a time when he got told, “No,” a lot.

He said, “I played that game where if I get told, ‘No,’ one more time, I’m out of here. I knew that this was going to be the meeting where it all happens. I remember I played probably half a song and the guy said, ‘I don’t know where you’re from, I don’t know much about you, but I’d go back there.’ And that was one time I was going to.”

Eric then got in his car and played The Austin Sessions.

Eric Church talks about the Kris Kristofferson song that encouraged him to tough it out in Nashville. “And the next song was ‘To Beat the Devil.’ And it talked about the very thing I was going through and so I decided to stay one more day after I got drunk. I got drunk first and then I stayed one more day and the next day I got a publishing deal. The phone rang. So, I’m here (cheers fade).”
