We are sad to report that this legendary newsman and longtime WYCD personality, Bob Schuman, has passed away.
For those of you who may not have heard via Facebook, Robert K. Schuman, affectionately known as ‘Bob,’ passed away from congestive heart failure Saturday morning January 30, 2016 at his home in Macomb County. He was only 65.
According to his wife, Cindy, he died peacefully in his sleep. They had just returned from a long road trip to Florida visiting family and friends and his sudden death was very unexpected. Our thoughts and prayers are with Bob’s beloved wife Cynthia Schuman, his children Christie and Rob and also his grandchildren during this most difficult time. A private ‘celebration of life’ memorial service is planned for family, close friends, radio and industry associates and co-workers. Cards and letters can be sent to the Schuman family: P.O. Box 512, Lakeland, MI 48143
Bob and ‘the love of his life‘ Cindy were longtime sweethearts meeting at North Central High School in their native Indianapolis. Schuman’s long and checkered resume started at the legendary 13 WIFE in Indy with a multitude of newsroom stops at a plethora of famous radio stations like: WNOE New Orleans, WSAI and Q102 Cincinnati, KLIF Dallas, Z93 Atlanta, WROR Boston and last 25+ years in Detroit at WJR, WOWF, WYCD and WOMC.
There was a brief stop at WOKV Jacksonville, but Bob didn’t seem to jell with the city “where Florida begins.” His last stop in The Motor City is well-remembered by any number of radio listeners, and he will surely be missed.
Bob Schuman had a wicked sense of humor, and anyone whomever worked with him will recall him as the one of the best news pros who ever delivered ‘bad news in a good way.’
Bob Schman’s dear friend Art Vuolo has shared this BEAUTIFUL video tribute to the greatest newsman/personality ever. Bob Schuman was one of a kind in every way, and this video includes the sentiments of many of us here at WYCD who were lucky enough to have known and worked with this incredible man.
On a personal side note: I was so very blessed to have worked with Bob from the onset of my own career in radio. ‘Buckaroo Bob’ was my mentor and my dear friend. Along with everyone that Bob ever worked with here in Detroit, I respected, admired and adored this longtime WYCD personality.
I am still in shock and filled with sorrow. You can click here to visit Bob Schuman’s personal Facebook page and see hundreds of comments and posts from family, friends and colleagues, but I also wanted to share the following post that I shared on my personal Facebook page:
A heartfelt tribute to my DEAR and WONDERFUL friend Bob Schuman: My heart is filled with sorrow and my thoughts and prayers are with my dear friend Bob Schuman’s wife Cynthia Schuman, daughter Christie Schuman Ellis, and son Rob Schuman this morning. I was and still am so shocked by Bob’s sudden, yet peaceful passing. All day yesterday through my tears I tried to find the words to express my deep love and GRATITUDE I have always had for this GREAT man who meant so much to me and so many other people here on earth. Bob Schuman was the MOST talented newsman and PERSONALITY I have ever been blessed to have worked with. He was my mentor, who led by example by striving for EXCELLENCE and he DELIVERED! Bob’s humor, quirky wit, inflection, professionalism, and BEAUTIFUL voice was only surpassed by his gregarious personality and zest for life. Bob loved his family and always credited his wife Cynthia Schuman (aka “The LOVE of his life!”) for putting up with his outrageous sense of blue humor and told me a bazillion times that SHE was the BEST thing that ever happened to him, and she also gave him his 2 wonderful children, whom he also adored. Bob and I have maintained a close friendship ever since the first day I walked into the doors at “Young Country” and interned with him alongside Karen & JD of the “Moo Crew,” And it was Bob who encouraged ‘Young Country’ to hire me full-time to work mornings together with Joseph Wade Formicola. Bob was my best friend in radio, the BEST ‘teacher’ who has ALWAYS INSPIRED me. Bob was ALWAYS KIND to me and the people we worked with. He taught me how to ‘duck’ when Infinity Broadcasting axe started swinging, and we managed to remain together in morning drive with a succession of other AM drive personalities, including Eddie Haskell & Doctor Don Carpenter! We had so much FUN together, “Good BODY Every Morning!” I always hoped that ‘one day’ we could work together on the radio again, because of ALL the super-talented people I have been so incredibly blessed to have worked with, Bob was and still is the person whom I have ADMIRED the most on every level. I will miss Bob more than words can say, as he has also been like a ‘father’ to me….ALWAYS there for me in my times of need with encouraging words. MOST importantly, Bob and I both shared our DEEP FAITH with one another. Bob LOVED the Lord and credited our Heavenly Father with the ‘miracle of life’ after his critical illness that nearly took him from the earth a couple of years ago. We talked about God a lot together….and truth be told, my first thought when I heard the shocking news that he had passed away was “You lucky dog….you got the ‘GO STRAIGHT TO HEAVEN PASS’ and you got to be with GOD and live an ETERNITY in HEAVEN with no pain or suffering beforehand….we should all be so lucky.” In my heart I KNOW that yesterday there was a GRAND CELEBRATION up in Heaven when Bob arrived, but my heart still aches with sorrow and grief, for it just seems that God took him too soon. My prayers will continue to be with Cindy, Christy, Rob and all the grandbabies and fur-babies that Bob loved so much. I will love you forever Bob Shuman and you will live forever in my heart “until we meet again.” Save me a place at ‘WGOD’….I sure hope I will be able to join you there one day too.
Love, Linda Lee
