Father’s Day Is Tough When Your Dad’s In Heaven…

Edwards & Lee sincerely wish all fathers a Happy Father’s Day this Sunday! In honor and in memory of our Dad’s who are both in heaven, we would like to share a little bit about Chuck’s dad ‘Gene,‘ and my dad ‘The Big Indian!’

Chuck Edwards and I both know firsthand how hard Father’s Day is when your Dad is in Heaven, so if your Dad is no longer here with us, please know that our thoughts and prayers will be with you too on Sunday.

If you’re lucky enough to still have your Dad here on earth,  be sure to spend time with your Dad while you still can!

Chuck’s dad Henry, who friends and family called Gene (his middle name) passed away in 2003. Gene was a veteran of the Korean War,  who married Chuck’s mom after the war ended and Chuck was their only child. Like me too, Chuck’s parents divorced when he was in elementary school and Gene later was remarried and had more children with his second wife.  Chuck says his BEST memories of his Dad were when he was an adult, and they reunited after being estranged for many years. Chuck has some super heartfelt advice for anyone who may have ‘issues’ with their own Dad:

“In the long run, its best to put your pride and differences aside and have some compassion and try to imagine yourself walking in his shoes.”

So true! Life is too short to not try to make amends with your family, especially your parents. There is no do-over once they are gone.

My dad Don, went my the nickname “Big Indian” and was not just my dad, he really was my best friend. Not a day goes by that I do not think of him, since he passed away in September of 2009. My mom & dad had 4 kids before they divorced when I was only 10. Both my parents remarried and had more kids, my dad had 2 more and my mom had 3 more. That made me the oldest of NINE kids total! So my dad had 6 kids, and was a hard-working devoted dad who worked up to 3 jobs at a time to raise us all after he got custody of all 4 kids when my parents divorced.

My best memories of my dad were on his beloved ‘Big Indian’ fishing boat on Lake Erie, where we spent many summers hanging out and fishing together. My Dad also taught me how to cook, he was a great chef who just had a knack for making his own delicious concoctions like Kielbasa with sauerkraut with a whole bottle of Open Pit BBQ sauce in a crockpot! It became a holiday tradition for our whole family at every holiday dinner too, because it’s so freakin’ delicious!

I could write a whole book of all the great memories I have of my dad, but I will just share one more here and that was the BEST Father’s Day ever with my dad. It was when my sister and I decided to surprise our dad and totally clean and detail his beloved boat, and dial in his dock at the marina where he kept his boat. While my sister power-cleaned the boat, I painted his old and dilapidated dock-box and old rusty mini-fridge that he kept there.  All the rest of us kids chipped in and bought him a new outdoor table & chair set with a new umbrella and a couple of flower pots with pretty flowers too! We were so excited and could not wait to see his reaction when he was what we did!

While he loved everything we did, I still laugh when I think about him complaining that after my sister Robin and I ‘organized‘ all his fishing stuff and crap he had in plastic grocery bags in every nook & cranny of the boat, he couldn’t find anything!

Thanks for letting us share our memories of our Dad’s with you, because while Father’s day is tough when your dad is in Heaven, it sure helps to think about all the things that made our dads so special to us!

HAPPY FATHER’S DAY!
