I say YES, pet insurance is a good idea! As the owner of 3 dogs, I’ll tell you why…
It’s hard to imagine the ‘unexpected things’ that can happen to our pets when we first bring home that healthy and adorable little puppy or kitten. But just like us humans, ‘things happen.’
I actually have only 2 dogs now, after losing the first dog I ever had in my adult life, my boy Elvis who lost his battle with an intestinal tumor a couple of months ago. Prior to that, I am guessing that we spent close to $5000 over his 12 years here on earth. He had a seizure at 8 weeks of age, and required medication to treat that for the rest of his life. When Elvis was 8 years old, our neighbors Pit Bull hopped our fence and got into a fight with tiny little Elvis, who ended up with several puncture wounds and ended up blind in one eye too. Two years ago Elvis injured his blind eye, and required a surgical procedure that cost over $1000 by a ‘doggie ophthalmologist!’ That’s just ‘some’ of the things that happened to Elvis requiring expensive veterinary care.
Our 10-year-old Yorkie Priscilla is getting her SECOND dental surgery to remove rotten teeth and clean the remaining teeth tomorrow. The estimate that we were given for this procedure which requires anesthesia is between $700-900. That’s in addition to the $100 we had to pay on Monday for routine shots and blood work needed before her surgery!
Veterinary care is SUPER EXPENSIVE and I sure wish I had purchased pet insurance BEFORE my dogs had these ‘pre-existing conditions.’ I really think in the long run that chances are that it will pay for itself eventually. Just one single and expensive medical treatment could be more than all the premiums you will pay over the life of the policy!
The lucrative pet insurance industry has hit an all-time high as new research reveals dogs are much more likely to be insured by their owners than cats.
The old adage that dogs are a man’s best friend would appear to ring true as one in four dogs are covered by insurance against unforeseen medical problems and traffic injuries. By comparison, only one in six cats are the subject of an insurance policy.
Pet insurance gives you peace of mind that you won’t have to deny your pet life-saving treatment because the veterinary bills are too expensive.
