Kim Kardashian and Naked Selfies — DJ Explains Her Open Letter That Went Viral

Many people are tired of Kim Kardashian‘s seemingly endless parade of scantily-clad and at times even naked selfies, but one woman is speaking out.

This week, Connecticut radio personality Christine Lee, cohost of the Craig and Company show on Hartford’s 96.5 TIC (a CBS Radio station), penned an open letter to Ms. Kardashian, imploring the selfie-centric celeb to think before she posts her next nude photo online.

In the letter, Lee wrote:

Consider how what you think are positive actions–uploading infinite “Sexy Kim” selfies that make you feel popular, valued & relevant–are actually negatively affecting millions of people…. Whether you realize it or not, you are glorifying vanity to a level that is frightening and extreme. An army of impressionable young girls and boys are learning that posting naked and narcissistic pictures online is not only okay, it’s cool. Is a world where self-respect is based on conceit a place you want your baby girl growing up?

The post has caught on in a huge way, garnering nearly a quarter of a million views to date. It’s also sparking a passionate debate over what defines narcissism, social media, bullying and yes, even Kim Kardashian herself…and what role each of these elements plays in modern society.

Based on the discussion between both Christine’s supporters and those taking issue with what she wrote, it seems this letter truly struck a chord not as an attack on Kardashian personally, but on the way our modern selfie-obsessed culture operates. It just so happens that Kim Kardashian is a celebrity who embraces this behavior, making her Lee’s perfect starting point to discuss much bigger issues.

That, at least, is what Lee, a radio personality and mother of two, hopes people take away from her words.

“My whole point was not to be what the internet is—I didn’t want it to be mean, I didn’t want to call her names, I didn’t want to do what I’ve seen done on Twitter…all the vile language that people call each other,” Lee explained about what drove her to write the open letter.
