Brittany Maynard is a 29-year-old woman with terminal brain cancer. When Brittany was told on January 1st this year, that her cancer was the most aggressive form of brain cancer with no cure and only months to live. She along with her family, made the decision to move from California to Oregon, which is one of only 3 states allowing ‘death with dignity‘ via a prescribed medication that will end her life when she chooses to do so. Brittany has chosen November 1, 2014. Watch her powerful video here, that she made in hopes of expanding this compassionate ‘death with dignity‘ law to all 50 states.
When faced with a terminal, often times painful and debilitating illness, I often wondered why we allow people to suffer horrendously until they take their last breath. Most people will agree that is the ‘compassionate thing to do‘ when our pets reach this stage in their lives, and will take our beloved pets to the vet and end their suffering with a prescribed medication. I really do not understand why most people do not all agree that humans deserve the same compassion?
As the caretaker of both my Dad and Father-in-law at the end of their lives, watching them both suffer tremendously while feeling SO helpless, I can totally understand why Brittany has made this decision to end her life in Oregon, where they allow ‘death with dignity,’ and I hope and pray that her video mission to expand this law into all 50 states will become a reality, sooner than later.
Here is Brittany Maynard’s powerful video.
Would you support a ‘death with dignity’ law here in the state of Michigan?
