Eric Church at Stagecoach: ‘I’m Just Trying to Have Some Fun’

Eric Church fans at Stagecoach — the three-day country music festival in Indio, Calif.—  got a lucky treat when he played a long, strong set that saw him “test[ing] some stuff out” during his Friday night headlining spot.

Church recently announced his Outsiders World Tour, but this Stagecoach show was a chance for him to in front of a large U.S. crowd and mix new songs in with his more familiar material.

“I’m just trying to have some fun and test some stuff out,” Church told Riverside, Calif. station KFRG (a Radio.com station). “Right now it’s a little bit of an exploration process. We’re going to go out there and see what happens.”

And he also is playing with the pacing of the show — the emotional ups and downs. “The best shows have those moods, they have those peaks, they have those valleys — it should be a show,” he said.

Despite the wind picking up and the weather getting cooler, Church still put on an incredible show. See the setlist below.

Festival shows at Stagecoach can be challenging for artists because frequently audience members are more interested in socializing and drinking than in paying attention to the act on stage. This wasn’t the case that night: For instance, it felt like every single person in the crowd of over 75,000 was singing along with Church’s latest single, “Give Me Back My Hometown.”

The audience loved hits like “Drink in My Hand,” “Homeboy,” and the title track from his Sinners Like Me album. He also included a few songs from his new album The Outsiders.

Church told KFRG that he “always will” mix old and new material into his live sets. “I’m still as proud of the Sinners Like Me album as The Outsiders album,” he said.

His 2012 single “Springsteen” came last in his set. The wind had really started picking up by this point and it was definitely getting cold. Still, anyone who left early missed out on a truly unforgettable performance.
