World Famous Photographer Nigel Barker talks with Rachael Hunter about the brand new Art Van catalog, of which he was the Creative Director. Nigel says of meeting Art Van Elslander, “We met up north (as in Northern Michigan) and I’ve been a fan of Michigan since the moment I first took a step in the US.” Nigel continues, “I met the DeVoss family. Pamela Roland (a fashion company), one half of that is Pamela DeVoss, is a fashion designer in New York. We started working together and she said that she wanted me to see her estate. So she invited me to Bay Harbor and Harbor Springs. It was during that time that I met Mr. Van Elslander and we became friends and he asked me if I would shoot the catalog and I said absolutely!”
Nigel was recently on Fashion Police, which by the way is one of Rachael’s favorite shows, talking about taking a selfie. Many people take a selfie with the camera up high pointing down to make them appear slimmer. However, this gives you a lollipop head. So, Nigel explains the perfect way to photograph a selfie, “If you want to look in proportion, then hold it at shoulder length, for losing the double chin, chin up in the air, fell that muscle tighten, come over your shoulder, get ready with that camera at shoulder length, take the picture at that moment, it eliminates the double chin and you look in proportion.”
One of Nigel’s more memorable clients to shoot was Taylor Swift. Nigel says, “She is an extraordinary star. I did an entire 60 page with her in 8 hours, not many people can do that, so big fan of hers.”
