Apparently inflation has hit the weekly allowance that some parents give their children! The percentage of parents giving an allowance of up to $10 a week has fallen while the percentage of parents giving between $11 and $30 has jumped sharply. Do you give your kids an allowance or do they earn it?
And some parents are feeling very flush indeed: Four percent give between $41-$50 a week in 2013. That is a whole lotta moolah, and I hope the kids have chores that must be done in order to get that kind of allowance!
I may not win a popularity contest by saying this, but I think there are way too many kids today who have a sense of ‘entitlement’ because they are GIVEN everything, and do NOT have to EARN anything. I have witnessed tons of kids who live at home, older kids who do NOTHING to help around the house, yet have their hand out getting money from Mom or Dad to go out to eat, go to the movies and pay nothing towards their cell phone or car insurance.
I was the ‘meanest Mom in America‘ because I did make my daughter pay her own car insurance, buy her own gas and pay for her own phone…while she was still in high school. She got a part time job bagging groceries at Kroger to pay for those ‘luxuries’ that she wanted and I refused to pay for her.
If you give your kids an allowance, how much is it and do you make them ‘earn it?”
