The legendary George Jones surely was smiling down from Heaven today, as the country music community honored and memorialized ‘the GREATEST country singer of all time‘ in the public funeral service from the Grand Ole Opry this morning. For the legions of fans like myself, I shed both happy and sad tears as I listened to all his friends share memories and sing special tribute songs in honor of “The Possum”…
The funeral services for the late George Jones from the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville begin at 10am and was broadcast live on CMT, GAC, RFD, FamilyNet, Opry.com, WSM-AM/Nashville and Sirius XM.
The musical tributes from Brad Paisley, Alan Jackson, Vince Gill (or “Sweet Pea” as George called him!) with Patty Loveless, Ronnie Milsap, The Oak Ridge Boys, Randy Travis, Kid Rock, Charlie Daniels, Travis Tritt, Tanya Tucker and Wynonna were beyond AMAZING!
Guest speakers included former First Lady Laura Bush, Barbara Mandrell, Kenny Chesney, Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam, Mike Huckabee, CBS News’ Bob Schieffer and Opry GM Pete Fisher.
There was not a dry eye in the house as Vince Gill and Patty Loveless did the most amazing rendition EVER of “Go Rest High On That Mountain”.
The song that Kid Rock wrote in memory of George Jones, directed to Jones beloved wife Nancy, “The Best Of Me” was so touching! Randy Travis rendition of “Amazing Grace” brought tears to my eyes too. And the grand finale, was of course “He Stopped Loving Her Today” by his close friend and country music legend, Alan Jackson,
I sure hope, and am pretty sure that one of the TV stations will re-air this funeral service that was as grand as the man they were honoring.
RIP George Jones, you WILL live forever in our hearts and your legacy will live on forever and ever!
