This may be the craziest thing I have heard in a long time. And disturbing too. High school hockey teams in Pennsylvania were notified by email that due to ‘economics’ they were advised to ditch playing the National Anthem before games, because ‘ice time is very expensive!‘ “We are recommending the national anthem not be played or sung or whatever it is,” Ed Sam, commissioner of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League tells Fox News….
PIHL commissioner Sam elaborated with local TV station KDKA:
“It has absolutely nothing to do with patriotism at all. That’s the furthest thing from the truth Ice is very, very hard to get and it’s not cheap, it costs upwards of $300 per hour for schools to rent ice rinks.”
As you could imagine, this decision has not went over very well in the hockey community. It is a tradition that is closely associated with the game itself. Those who have ‘done the math’ say it probably costs $25 at the most to play the anthem which is approximately 2 minutes long before the start of a game. If the schools cannot or do not want to pay for the extra 2 minutes of ‘ice time’….certainly they could get a local business to sponsor and pay the $25 bucks, wouldn’t you think?
I wonder what ‘hockey moms’ think about this? How would you feel if your kids hockey team eliminated the National Anthem in order to save money?
