99.5 WYCD’s Dr. Don Morning Show with Rachael and Grunwald traveled to Nashville to talk with Taylor Swift about her new album Red, and found out a little more about her journey to Paris to film “Begin Again” as well as where her best advice has come from, and her dad’s ‘high frequency’ stories.
The beautiful closing song “Begin Again” is quite an “intricate song” Taylor tells us, “it took 6 months to write. I kept picking it up and putting back down.” Coincidentally, the song is about “insecurity and being unsure of yourself because of past relationships, and I had a lot of insecurity writing this song.”
The just released video for “Begin Again” was shot in Paris. Endearingly, Taylor reveals that “Paris is definitely a character in the video.” Though she tells us she had “so much fun” in Paris; with her interview schedule, TV appearances and promotions she didn’t have time for that one thing we would all love to do in Paris – shopping! She did comment on the food however, even when she was too tired to go out after a long day’s work, “the food is SO good, even the room service is like perfect!’
Dr. Don attempts to question Taylor Swift about a ‘story’ her dad told him, but it came as no surprise to Swift that there was some confusion. “My dad has like 400 million stories and he does not know how to categorize them. If you talk to my dad, there is so much information coming at you so quickly, like high frequencies” she explains “you need a court stenographer.” Taylor admits that her dad does embellish those stories, and she and her mom are “like that didn’t happen like that.” Lovingly she adds, “my dad will make stuff up and it’s really adorable ‘cause he thinks it really happened that way.”
Phil Vassar is the subject of this particular story. Taylor opened for him about four years ago, and Phil was “always really nice to me.” She continues, “you learn from people who are nice to you.” Patterning the way she presents herself and the way she treats people, after great advice given to her by Vassar and others, Swift tells us that “everybody you open for has taught you something.”
An inside scoop from Taylor’s guitar player Grant Mickelson and mutual cat lover (he has a cat named ‘Marilyn’) led Rachael Hunter to ask if she will ever write a song about her much-loved cat, Meredith? “There is never going to be a song written about my cat – ever – who wants to listen to that?” Of course, she blushes as Dr. Don says, she could sing the phone book and people would want to listen!
“With this record I needed to challenge myself and do something I’ve never done before – maybe if I run out of ideas I will go to writing songs about animals – probably never. Like ever.”
