Does your dog have his or her own Facebook page? Perhaps it will come as no surprise that the number of pets using social media has soared over the past year. According to a new study by pet insurer Petplan, there’s been a 36% increase in the number of pet owners creating Facebook and Twitter accounts for their animals in the last 12 months. One of my favorite late night TV talk show hosts, Chelsea Handler, created a Facebook & Twitter page for her beloved dog “Chunk!” Much as I love Chelsea, I have not ‘friended’ or ‘followed’ her dog!
Facebook is the more popular destination, with 7% of dogs on the site, compared to 4% of cats.
42% of pet owners upload pictures of their pets.
I am a huge dog lover, and somewhat of a freak when it comes to my 3 dogs, Elvis, Priscilla and Lisa “Miracle” Marie….but they do not have their own social networking pages! I post pics of them on my page, but I personally think it is a bit over the top to create a page for them. It’s not like they can type in their own status updates, or click ‘like’ on posts from others!
Do you think it’s cool or stupid for pets to have their own Facebook or Twitter accounts?
