Remember the viral video of the lady who walked right into the fountain at the shopping mall, because she was texting while walking?  She was definitely distracted, and although she was probably humiliated by the video on YouTube, at least she was not seriously hurt. Government officials and safety experts now say that distracted walking is a growing problem. The problem isn’t as widely discussed as distracted driving, but the danger is real…see the video of the lady falling into fountain too.

Reports of injuries to walkers, who are talking, walking and texting have more than quadrupled in the past seven years and are almost certainly under-reported. State and local officials are struggling to figure out how to respond, and in some cases asking how far government should go in trying to protect people from themselves.

Our smartphones can do a lot to make our lives easier, but using them while walking does present a real danger!
