On a daily basis, how many times do you lie? Really think about, too. I am not talking about just lies that might get you out of trouble, but I mean lies that may spare someone feelings. Or how about telling someone you will keep a secret, then you actually tell the secret. OK, so how many times do you lie in a day? While your daily count probably isn’t that high, but after you tally it up for the week, and even the month, you lie more than you could imagine. And it affects your health more than you think!
According to the Detroit Free Press, on average, Americans lie about 11 times a week. While it doesn’t seem that much, you have to take into account what lying does to your health. A group did a 10 week study with 110 people of all ages and backgrounds, and they noticed the more lies the people told, the worse their health got. And when those same people started to tell the truth more often and lie less, their health actually rose!
“A reduction in the lies of our participants across the 10 weeks of their participation was associated with better physical and mental health in those same weeks when those individuals had engaged in less lying,” she says. Also, actually inducing people to lie less caused them to see themselves as more honest as compared to the people who were not induced to stop lying. And, getting people to stop lying also strengthens the link between fewer lies and better health to be stronger.”
All that stress is probably doing things to your body you couldn’t imagine, but telling the truth seems to be a stress reliever. So relieve some stress and come clean with your lies. What is the most recent lie you told someone?
