I’ve never paid this much attention when buying food at the grocery store, but there are two types of Salmon you can buy. Wild Salmon and farmed Salmon. Wild Salmon is much harder to find and I’m betting you didn’t know that the farmed Salmon is actually grey in color instead of the pinkish, orange color that we expect. So now you’re saying, “I’ve never seen grey Salmon before.” That’s because the fish is actually given chemicals that dye it the classic Salmon color. The two chemicals canthaxanthin and astaxanthin are the same chemicals found in nature that give wild Salmon their color.
Some customers are appalled at the news and are suing grocery stores for not giving them the opportunity to decide for the themselves if the fish with added chemicals is safe to eat. Grocers say the farmed Salmon are healthy and safe foods.
Do you feel cheated knowing your Salmon might not really be Salmon colored? Also did you know that hens are given the same chemicals to ensure their yolks are yellow? Most consumers won’t buy or eat food if it’s different from what they expect. So would you eat grey Salmon or green eggs? Sounds gross, but I bet it tastes the same.
