Songs were written about dancing in the streets and never in any of those songs were stories of people getting arrested for it. That’s exactly what happened to a couple in New York City. Caroline Stern and George Hess were returning from a swing dancing event and while waiting for the train on the subway a street musician started playing his steel drums. The couple proceeded to dance to the music until police showed up and said they couldn’t do that. Hess grabbed his camera to try to document the ridiculous commands and was allegedly tackled to the ground and arrested along with his significant other. The couple have filed a lawsuit against the city and Caroline Stern said, “When you’re waiting for the subway late at night, there’s not much to do but dance and celebrate life.”
I hope this couple wins their lawsuit because if having fun is a crime, I should be in prison. I would have to believe there are many other things the NYC Police should be worrying about other than a couple dancing in the street. This story reminds me of a bar ( I won’t name names) in Royal Oak that doesn’t allow dancing. If you’re there and start to strut your stuff you’ll be kicked out. I could not believe that could be an actual rule or law for that matter.
