In an office setting, sometimes it’s more productive to eat lunch at your desk while you work away. Even though you legally get to take a lunch doesn’t mean the project you are trying to finish allows you to do so. So the easiest thing to do is act like you are taking your lunch and just continue to work away. Many would think that would show dedication. One woman found out that it can get you fired!
According to Yahoo, Sharon Smiley had just celebrated her 10 year anniversary with Chicago’s Equity Lifestyle Properties Inc. in 2010. And on Jan. 28, 2010, Sharon clocked out for lunch time, but decided to keep working anyway. She ended up getting fired over it, and she thought it was the fact someone thought she was actually eating at her desk, which she knew was not allowed.
“I knew you couldn’t eat lunch at your desk,” Smiley told ABC News. “I was under the impression that because I was punched out and I could do what I want.”
And unlike Michigan, Illinois doesn’t have any laws that stops a company from letting people go.
“Nonetheless, Illinois is an employment-at-will state, which means the employer can fire someone for a good reason, no reason, or a bad reason, as long as it is not discriminatory,” he said.
She ended up taking them court and won. Read more at Yahoo.com to see how it happened.
