My daughter Gina may be 26 years old, but like most Mom’s say, ‘she’ll always be my baby!’ And I am here to tell other Moms and Dads to not give up hope that your kid will some day ‘see the light’ and go back to school, either college or trade school to get the education they need in this day and age, for a career doing something they love, with good pay and benefits too! Gina decided on her own, that ‘maybe you are right Mom‘ and started her new college classes this week! If all goes according to her ‘new plan’ when she graduates college, she will start a new career as a registered nurse!
I never gave up hope, that Gina would someday take my advice and go back to school! I always told her that ‘it’s never too late’ to go back to school, and I would help and support her in any way I could, if she decided to do so! I also told her it was even more important to find something she was interested in, that would lead to a JOB in a field that offered good pay and benefits!
Gina has done very well for herself working as a waitress, making enough money to support herself and live on her own, but none of her waitressing jobs ever offered health insurance or any other benefits either. After a few illnesses and ER visits, with enormous medical bills that she was responsible for, she found out firsthand how important it is to have health insurance.
I had to learn things ‘the hard way’ when I was her age too, she is ‘hard-headed’ just like her Mama, so it was best for me to take a step back and not nag her to do something she was not ready to do on her own! But you cannot even imagine how happy I was was Gina told me that she was going to take the perquisite classes that were necessary to sign up for the Nursing Program at Washtenaw Community College this semester!
Woo-hoo…she did it all on her own, her decision when she was ready! So if you are a parent like me who has hoped and prayed that your kid would eventually realize, that finding a fulfilling career opportunity would most likely require furthering their education..don’t give up hope! Just when you think they have not listened to a word you have said, they prove you wrong…in a GOOD way!
