[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Taylor Swift[/lastfm]’s new album, Speak Now, sold nearly 1,047,000 copies during its first week of release, debuting at #1 on both the all-genre Billboard 200 and Billboard’s Country Albums chart. Yesterday morning she tweeted, “I… Can’t… Believe… This… You guys have absolutely lit up my world. Thank you.”
Taylor’s feat marks the largest sales week for an album since [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]50 Cent[/lastfm]’s The Massacre sold 1,141,000 copies in 2005. Speak Now is the first CD to generate first-week sales of one million-plus since [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Lil’ Wayne[/lastfm]’s Tha Carter III in 2008. It also has the distinction of having the second-largest sales week of any country album since 1991; [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Garth Brooks[/lastfm]’ Double Live in 1998 debuted at 1,085,000 in sales. Swift now holds the record for the biggest sales week of any female country act since 1991; [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Shania Twain[/lastfm]’s Up! rolled out with 874,000 at #1 in 2002. Speak Now is just the 16th album in the SoundScan era to sell over a million copies in one week, and Taylor joins [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Whitney Houston[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Norah Jones[/lastfm] and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Britney Spears[/lastfm] as the only female artists in history to sell more than a million albums in a debut week

Swift’s sales are fueled by her current #1 (Mediabase) tune, “Mine.” For Taylor, though, it’s just all about the music and the connection with her fans.

Rounding out the Top 5 on Billboard’s Country Albums chart are [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Sugarland[/lastfm] with The Incredible Machine at #2, [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Darius Rucker[/lastfm]’s Charleston, SC 1966 at #3, [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Band Perry[/lastfm]’s self-titled CD at #4, and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Kenny Chesney[/lastfm]at #5 with Hemingway’s Whiskey.

Congrats on the the status but please don’t classify her in the country genre. She is using it as a platform bcause the pop genre s so tight and not all her songs make I there! If you have to remix your music to have it played on different stations then you are not true to your country roots!!!

I find it amazing that so many people are so mesmerized by Taylor Swift. She is a very sweet, caring young lady who writes cute girl songs, but she can’t sing. She should write for other people. Writing is where her talent is, not singing.
