99.5 WYCD extends their condolences to the family and friends of Officer Matt Edwards who was killed in the line of duty on Friday morning, July 23rd at 6:00 a.m.   The Thin Blue Line of Michigan is honored by both the Taylor Police Department and the Edwards’ family to assist with both the visitation and funeral services.  A private fund for the family has been established by the Thin Blue Line of Michigan for the benefit of (FBO) the Edwards ‘Family. A Public viewing for Taylor Police Cpl. Matthew Edwards is scheduled for 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 26, and Wednesday, July 27, at Howe-Peterson Funeral Home, 9800 Telegraph Road, Taylor.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 29th at Beacon Baptist Church, 21721 Northline Road. Police officers will assemble at 9 a.m. The public viewing begins at 11 a.m. The funeral will begin at noon.

After the funeral, there will be a procession to Michigan Memorial Cemetery in Huron Township.

Cpl. Edwards, 31, was killed in the line of duty about 6 a.m. on Friday while responding to a call of breaking and entering in the 12400 block of Pine Street in the Coppertree Apartments. Cpl. Edwards and his partner confronted a man matching the description in the parking lot. Cpl. Edwards encountered the defendant, a 36-year-old Westland man. Witnesses told police that Cpl. Edwards was speaking with the defendant when they saw the defendant pull out a gun and shoot the officer. Cpl. Edwards’ partner returned fire, shooting the defendant several times. The defendant was taken to a nearby hospital and underwent surgery. He is listed in stable condition. Cpl. Edwards was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Cpl. Edwards joined the Taylor Police Department in January 2005. He was a decorated officer and was named Officer of the Year in 2008 by the Police Officers Association of Michigan.

He was the first officer killed in the line of duty in the history of the Taylor Police Department. U.S. Flags in the city have been lowered to half-staff.

Cpl. Edwards is survived by his wife and two young children.
