While it didn’t compare to the enormous spectacle of the Opening Ceremonies at the Olympic Games, the official lighting of the WYCD Downtown Hoedown Flame (uh, barbeque grill) was a spectacle just the same.
[photogallerylink id=12526 align=right] Jason the 300lb Cowboy tirelessly trekked from the Greektown Casino-Hotel and proudly descended the steps of the Hart Plaza Pavilion at 7:30 a.m. on Thursday morning, May 13, wielding his WYCD Tiki torch to light the unceremonial barbeque grill, officially kicking off the 28th Annual WYCD Downtown Hoedown Weekend!
Diehard Detroit country music fans (some of whom arrived at Hart Plaza at 4 am to be a part of this history-making moment) were on hand to cheer the station’s torchbearer, who donned a hot dog necklace instead of the more traditional laurel wreath. The first 100 people received a FREE WYCD Downtown Hoedown/GMC t shirt guaranteeing them VIP seating all weekend long! And while he had a great fire going on the grill, Jason the 300lb Cowboy graciously barbequed the hot dogs on his necklace for a few hungry fans who eagerly enjoyed breakfast!
